August 2024 · 4 minute read

Which name comes to mind when you think of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC? Well, one of the names that definitely stands out is that of UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. The UFC champ made his UFC debut back in 2016 and has been on a path of success ever since. He is widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the promotion currently.

Winning the championship is the easy part! Retaining the title and fending off other title-hungry fighters consistently is what sets you apart from the others. Volkanovski is a fighter who has, time and again, defended his title and has shown the world that he truly is one of the best featherweight fighters in the world. On that note, let’s walk down memory lane and take a look at some of Volkanovski’s most glorious title defenses.

Alexander Volkanovski beats Max Holloway at UFC 245 for the featherweight strap

You cannot talk about the greatness of Alexander Volkanovski, without talking about Max Holloway. Holloway is, in some ways, the fighter who proved exactly how difficult it is to beat Alexander Volkanovski. The Hawaiian is a highly decorated and feared fighter in the featherweight division and he fought Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski at UFC 245.

The fight took place back in 2019. At that time, Holloway was the UFC featherweight champ. He had a good reign but an undefeated Alexander Volkanovski had earned his way into the Octagon with Holloway. In the first few rounds, Volkanovski controlled the pace of the fight, relying heavily on his devastating leg kicks that slowed down Holloway. Volkanvski scored some crucial points early on in the fight.

However, late in the fight, it seemed like Holloway was more well-versed with Volkanovski’s striking. He landed a few good shots of his own, but in the end, Volkanovski took the win by decision. He dethroned Holloway and became the UFC featherweight champ. To date, there has been no one that has even come close to snatching the title away from ‘The Great’.

Alexander Volkanovski’s title defenses and Max Holloway trilogy

After Alexander Volknovski won the featherweight title from Max Holloway at UFC 245, his troubles had only begun. Now, he had to defend his title against the hungriest fighters in the featherweight division. Since he became the UFC champ, he has had to defend his title a total of five times.

His first title defense was against the very man whom he had won the title from – Max Holloway, at UFC 251. Holloway hoped that things would be different this time. However, Volkanovski proved his mettle yet again and won the fight by split decision. His next title defense was against Brian Ortega at UFC 266. By this time, Volkanovski had gotten exponentially better as a fighter. Ortega did the best he could but ultimately fell to ‘The Great’. Volkanovski won by unanimous decision.

Jung Chan-sung (The Korean Zombie) was next in line to try his hand at taking the featherweight title away from Volkanovski. However, at UFC 273, Volkanovski proved his superiority by scoring a TKO win at the 0:45 mark of the fourth round and retained his title once again. Three months later, Max Holloway decided to give it his all and go for another shot at UFC 276. However, Volkanovski proved that he is a better fighter by far and a more deserving champ as he won his fight against Max Holloway by unanimous decision. This completed the Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway trilogy, with Volkanovski winning all three. However, Holloway still hopes that there will be a 4th fight between the two featherweights.

Alexander Volkanovski Is “Warming Up His Excuses” Declares Islam Makhachev Fans After FW Champ’s Unexpected Confession on UFC 294 Fight

Volkanovski’s last title defense was against Yair Rodriguez, the then-interim UFC featherweight champ. Rodriguez did put up a good fight but it wasn’t enough to bring down Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski. As of today, Volkanovski’s UFC record stands at 26-2-0. His only loss in the UFC came when he moved up to the lightweight division and challenged the division champ Islam Makhachev for the title.
