The XXL Bombshell Blowout Is The Cool Girl Way To Add Volume To Hair| Glamour UK

March 2024 · 3 minute read

Undone ‘French girl’ hair, with its laissez-fair approach to styling, almost made our hair dryers redundant. But now that oversight has been corrected with the XXL bombshell blowout.

The volume we once tried to smooth into submission is being tousled back into existence once again and now it's poised to be a must-do summer trend for ‘going out’ and date night hair.

The internet is awash with different influences for the look. “It is a total modern revisit of '70s Jerry Hall hair,” says hairstylist Neil Moodie. Other references unsurprisingly include Barbie the movie and a love affair with Pamela Anderson's '90s hair.

Whatever the inspiration, the fact remains that we're finally going all-in for reviving the XXL bombshell blowout.

Even celebrities have jumped on the trend. While for Jennifer Lopez the appeal of a big, bouncy blow dry never waned, there's been a marked shift in perception and high-key glamorous hair has actually become cool again.

Sydney Sweeney arguably signalled its return when she wowed on the red carpet at this year's Met Gala with a fluffy Barbie-esque blowout and oversized hair bow.

Now everyone from Gigi Hadid to Jennifer Lawrence have followed suit with the gravity-defying hairstyle, while Beyoncé has artfully switched between barrel waves and the XXL bombshell blowout on her Renaissance tour.

How to create the XXL bombshell blowout

The XXL bombshell blowout is characterised by extra high root lift at the crown before cascading out into big '70s-style waves that surround the face.

“If there's no root lift, you simply won't get the volume elsewhere, which is why root sprays and volumising mousses work best,” says Neil, who recommends working the Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Superlift Volumising Spray through the roots of towel-dried hair before blow drying with a round brush.

“Use a blast from the cold shot button on your hairdryer to set the hair and pin each section," says Neil. “All importantly, make sure that the roots are completely dry.”

Alternatively, rough dry your hair and use a large curling tong, setting the waves with hairspray and pinning them for 30 minutes before gently brushing your hair out. Or follow the advice of content creator Olivia Daytonn who uses the Dyson Airwrap and recommends using both the hot and cold shots to make the curl last longer.

“For extra lift along the front hairline, use a wide tooth comb to lift the hair up a couple of centimetres away from the roots, mist with hairspray and blast with heat,” Neil adds.

Extensions may be necessary if you have really fine hair while Neil recommends hair steaming for Afro hair prior to creating this voluminous look. “You can do this at home by adding a treatment mask to your hair after shampooing and wrapping your head in cling film for 20 minutes,” he says. “Then sleep with your hair wrapped flat in a silk scarf or blow dry it out with a large round bristle brush.”

The XXL bombshell blowout doesn't have to be worn loose all the time, either, as Dua Lipa's thick wavy mane and high ponytail prove. A signature look of late, she's chosen the style for both the video of the Barbie theme song Dance The Night and her Versace collaboration.

To recreate Dua's look, Neil recommends the same steps except when you brush the hair out, spray hairspray onto a flat bristle brush and then scoop the hair into a ponytail on the crown of the head.

All that's left to do, is to give it some attitude with a good hair flick.
